Mosaic Salon Stairwell

This project was done to both enliven a stark, white stairwell landing of 26 vertical feet, but also to disguise a plethora of ducts, vents and cables that presented a chaotic scene on a prominent wall face. This infrastructure also prevented easy painting of the wall itself, so we decided to hang these hand-painted, sail-like banners in front of the hodge podge to make it less visible.

The sail material is an IFR polyester muslin, fabricated to our specs by the drapery shop at PNTA in Seattle. The scaffolding had been removed by the time these were hoisted into place, but not before the contractor attached a series of eye hooks to the unistrut that was attached to the ceiling.

Subject mater was to be loosely based on sails, boats, sea creatures, and abstractions of water and waves. I keep the material unprimed so I could get some soft water-color effects. There are some other sails mounted in the entry and a vestibule area throughout the two story salon complex but this is the main event.
